Taking it steady this week as my tapering period starts. Easy runs through the week and a blast at the weekend on a flat course at Belvoir Half Marathon.
Not completed the target mileage as defined by my training schedule but not too worried as I prefer not to force myself out on long runs at the moment, just want to take it easy as I think I am as ready as I ever will be, so just need to tick over for a couple of weeks.
Sunday’s ‘long’ run – The Belvoir Half Marathon
These days a half marathon does not feel like a long run. With perfect weather conditions and flat course ahead, this run was chance to see how fast I could go for a decent length of time. Running as part of a team of 6 ‘Scraptoft Joggers’ (Baz, Stef, Michael, Richard, Kathryn & myself), I set off with Stef at quite a fast pace – 7:07 for the first mile. We kept our pace below 7:30 for the next 4 or so before making a conscious decision to ease off slightly.
So after three slower miles (mile 6 – 7:34, mile 7 – 7:42, mile 8 – 7:39), I felt good and thinking that I only had 5 miles to go I thought it was time to push on again, this time without Stef. This was probably slightly too early because miles 11 & 12 were my slowest during the race at 7:41 & 7:59 respectively but I still had enough in the tank to push back under 7:30 for the last mile and finish with an average pace of 7:29 min/mile and a personal best time of 1:37:36 (10 minutes faster than my previous PB).
I will certainly need to slow my pace down when it comes to the full marathon in 2 weeks time but it was good boost to my confidence to get this one under my belt.
